Alpha is a space to explore life's big questions, to say what you think and to hear other people's points of view. It is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith, run over eleven weeks. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is run all around the globe, and everyone is welcome. No two Alphas look the same, but they generally have three key things in common: food, a talk and good conversation.
We start with food, because it’s a great way to encourage community and get to know each other. The talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation. Generally thirty minutes long, the talks are played as a video. They explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions such as Who is Jesus? and How can we have faith?
Probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and simply discuss it in a small group. There’s no obligation to say anything. And there’s nothing you can’t say. It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment.
"I was religious but had some questions. After attending the session I have found inner peace and my questions have been answered. It has made my faith grow and my journey with God and my Husband ten times better. I have learned so much and as a young adult feel closer to God then I have ever before. People should participate in Alpha to seek to understand their questions. To grow their faith. Go to the class and become close to God and your parish members." ~Emily W.
"I feel like I took Jesus for granted. When I did these things [acts of service], I didn't ask myself,, "What would Jesus do?" 3. Alpha has made me realize that everything I do is because of Jesus. I used to be confused of the statement "I found Jesus" (most often from prisoners). I would think "was he lost?" Now I realize that those people who "found" Jesus can live a more productive and content life. 4. The Alpha program gave me the realization that everyone needs Jesus in their life for different reasons. Our group discussions seemed to give many people a since of comfort and healing." ~Jane W.
